With Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker struggling most of the season, the Chiefs added one of the best kickers in NFL history. Will he replace Butker on the 53-man roster?
Veteran kicker Justin Tucker has been signed to the Kansas City Chiefs Practice Squad. The former Baltimore Ravens standout is fresh off serving a 10-game suspension that led to his release from the AFC North team. His issues stem from allegations by massage workers; even though he was never charged, he agreed to accept the suspension.
Since his release from the Ravens, he’s tried out with the New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Indianapolis Colts, and Miami Dolphins. He comes to the Chiefs as Harrison Butker continues to struggle to find the middle of the goalposts. After missing two more field goals Sunday at Seattle, that makes 15 misses since the 2025 season began.
It’s a curious fall, considering he had a strong preseason, including a 69-yard field goal, but he’s been erratic at best on both field goals and extra points for more than a year now. Tucker, 36, an eight-time Pro Bowl kicker, could get his chance to return to the NFL as early as Sunday in Denver.
Reports suggest Butker could be placed on injured reserve, suggesting his struggles may stem from a leg injury. Still, Tucker, who has yet to find a new team, comes to the Chiefs, who badly need their kicking situation to get back on track.
Notably, Tucker hasn’t kicked in the NFL since the 2024 season, but reportedly went 30 for 30 in his tryout with the Chiefs on Tuesday.
The Chiefs are back at practice today, and Head Coach Andy Reid will update the media on why they signed Tucker and whether he will be elevated this week in their AFC West showdown against the Denver Broncos.
